King Protea

Pointed two-tier pink involucre surrounding a tall decagonal cream cone with thirty individually notched fringe combs and integral paper mounting feet.

Materials

  • 160 gsm cream, pink and green paper
  • 100-120 gsm pale ivory paper for fringe
  • Scissors or craft knife and cutting mat
  • Ruler and scoring tool
  • PVA glue

Finished size: 125 x 125 x 66 mm approximately

Steps

  1. Cut and score at actual size

Print at 100 percent; the ruler must measure 50 mm. Cut BASE and all C panels. Score the 12 mm foot hinge and long side-lap hinge on each panel. Use 160 gsm paper for the cone and base.

  2. Close the tall ten-sided cone

Join C01 through C10 clockwise viewed from above: each 3 mm side lap glues under the next panel left edge. Match base corners and apex; close C10 to C01. Set base corner-to-corner diameter to 56 mm and height to 65 mm. Fold each 6 mm foot inward until horizontal (about 112 degrees from its unfolded continuation). Dry the seam before mounting.

  3. Mount the cone on paper

Apply a thin layer of glue to the undersides of all ten inward feet while the cone is lifted. Center the cone on the 76 mm BASE, leaving 10 mm from each cone base corner to the disk edge. Lower all feet onto BASE together. Gently hold the cone down at its lower corners without crushing the apex. Let dry 15 minutes.

  4. Add fringe tier 1

Cut the ten Fxx_1 combs from 100-120 gsm pale paper, including every open notch between teeth. Keep the 4 mm band intact. Fold each 10 mm tooth outward by 20 degrees at the printed hinge. Glue only the band onto its matching numbered cone face, centered left-right, with the lower band edge 8 mm up the sloping face from the base edge. Work around all ten faces; teeth point toward the apex. Dry 5 minutes before the next tier.

  5. Add fringe tier 2

Cut the ten Fxx_2 combs from 100-120 gsm pale paper, including every open notch between teeth. Keep the 4 mm band intact. Fold each 10 mm tooth outward by 20 degrees at the printed hinge. Glue only the band onto its matching numbered cone face, centered left-right, with the lower band edge 25 mm up the sloping face from the base edge. Work around all ten faces; teeth point toward the apex. Dry 5 minutes before the next tier.

  6. Add fringe tier 3

Cut the ten Fxx_3 combs from 100-120 gsm pale paper, including every open notch between teeth. Keep the 4 mm band intact. Fold each 10 mm tooth outward by 20 degrees at the printed hinge. Glue only the band onto its matching numbered cone face, centered left-right, with the lower band edge 42 mm up the sloping face from the base edge. Work around all ten faces; teeth point toward the apex. Dry 5 minutes before the next tier.

  7. Plant the outer pink involucre

Cut O01-O10 from 160 gsm dark pink paper. Fold each 6 mm foot inward so the 40 mm pointed blade rises 45 degrees above BASE. Glue feet flat with hinge midpoints 34 mm from disk center. Space at 36 degree intervals, halfway between cone face centers. Opposite hinge midpoints are 68 mm apart. Hold until tacky, then dry 10 minutes.

  8. Raise the inner pointed crown

Cut I01-I10 from 160 gsm light pink paper. Fold feet inward so the 60 mm blades rise 70 degrees above BASE. Glue hinge midpoints at radius 29 mm, one aligned with each cone face center, staggered 18 degrees from the outer row. Opposite hinges are 58 mm apart. Keep tips sharp and straight; the pale cone projects above the inner tips. Dry 20 minutes on a level surface. This is a freestanding flower head with all-paper mounts, not a stemmed flower.

Notes

The 3D model shows each piece in its finished, idealized shape; the exploded view only spreads the pieces apart. It is not a paper-physics simulation: curved shapes are forming guides, not exact physical folding or proof of developability, and intermediate fold shapes are not supplied.
