Scarlet Folded Poppy
Four broad scalloped scarlet petals form a shallow folded cup around a black sixteen-tooth crown and an eight-ray green-and-gold stigma.
Materials
- 120-160 gsm scarlet paper for P1-P4
- 160 gsm green paper for B1 and C1
- 120-160 gsm black paper for S1
- 120 gsm ochre paper for C2
- Scissors or craft knife with cutting mat
- PVA glue
- Ruler and blunt scoring tool
Finished size: Approximately 109 x 109 x 27 mm; flower head only

-
Prepare the backing
Check print scale, then cut each piece once along its solid perimeter, including all S1 tooth notches. Keep IDs on the reverse. Lay B1 green side up as the backing.
-
Fold and attach the first opposite pair
Score P1 and P3 across the three dashed lines, 10, 28 and 48 mm from the square root. Valley-fold upward by 15 degrees at the first hinge, another 15 at the second, and another 20 at the third: panels end at 15, 30 and 50 degrees above the root. Keep the 16 x 10 mm root flat. Glue its dotted underside to B1 with the midpoint of its short bottom edge at the backing center. Point P1 north and P3 south. Press the roots flat and let set.
-
Complete the four-petal cup
Fold P2 and P4 exactly like the first pair. Glue the root undersides with their bottom-edge midpoints at the same center, P2 west and P4 east. Root corners overlap by up to 8 mm; keep all broad petal bodies unglued. Hold the central stack flat until dry. Small layer-height differences in the preview are schematic.
-
Raise the black stamens
Keep the black central polygon flat. Score each dashed tooth root and valley-fold all sixteen teeth upward 40 degrees. Do not cut the dashed hinges. Apply a thin coat of glue to the dotted central underside and center S1 over the four petal roots. Press only the flat center; leave the raised teeth free.
-
Add the green stigma
Glue the dotted underside of C1 centrally onto the flat black center, leaving the black border and teeth visible all around. Keep this disc flat; it does not cap a cylinder.
-
Finish the radiating cap
Glue the dotted underside of C2 to the center of C1, with its eight rays spread flat. Let all glue dry with the backing resting on the table. Adjust the petal hinge angles gently to make an open cup; do not glue the outer petal edges. Printing, cutting and physical assembly still need a real-world trial.
Notes
The 3D model shows each piece in its finished, idealized shape; the exploded view only spreads the pieces apart. It is not a paper-physics simulation: curved shapes are forming guides, not exact physical folding or proof of developability, and intermediate fold shapes are not supplied.
- Original folded-paper interpretation of a four-petal poppy. Physical assembly pending.
- Print at 100% and check the 50 mm ruler. Templates are unfilled outlines: use colored paper or transfer them. Each ID is one cut piece.
- Petal panels are piecewise rigid, not a simulation of soft crinkled petals. Straight folds replace natural compound curvature. Do not stretch or add cuts.
- The stigma is a flat layered motif, not a domed seed capsule. No stem, wire or hidden support is included.
- The mesh uses zero-thickness sheets and 0.2 mm layer offsets. Glue compression, springback and hand-fold tolerances are not simulated. Keep petal bodies free; only their root tabs overlap.
- All dotted glue marks refer to the underside. Score dashed valleys with the displayed face upward. Final geometry is a target pose, not continuous folding animation.
