Tapered Paper Basket
An open flared basket with an integral closed square floor, four sloped walls and a separate semicircular paper handle.
Materials
- 180-220 gsm cardstock
- Scissors
- Ruler and blunt scoring tool
- PVA craft glue
- Small clips for drying
- Round pencil for pre-curling
Finished size: 80 x 80 x 70 mm; base 60 x 60 mm; rim height 30 mm

-
Print and cut two pieces
Print at 100% actual size. Check the 50 mm ruler and the 60 mm square floor. Cut B1 and H1 on their solid outer outlines, keeping all four corner tabs. The handle must measure 14 x 155.664 mm. Do not cut dashed creases.
-
Score and raise the sloping walls
Use the printed face as the inside of B1. Score the four floor edges and four corner-tab hinges. Valley-fold each wall up 71.565 degrees from the flat floor, leaving it tilted 18.435 degrees outward from vertical. Dry-fit a square rim 80 x 80 mm, 30 mm above the 60 mm floor; the top remains completely open.
-
Close four tapered corners
The two opposite walls with tabs also carry the handle glue patches. Bend their four 7 mm tabs inward about 84.261 degrees relative to their wall, so each lies flat against the inside of a neighboring untabbed wall. Apply a thin film to the contacting tab face; align the 33.166 mm sloping corner edges from floor to rim. Press one corner at a time, keeping the floor flat and the rim square. Clip and let all four seams set before fitting the handle.
-
Form the measured arch
Score the transverse lines 15 mm from each end. Pre-curl only the 125.664 mm central length over a pencil, gradually forming a smooth semicircle of 40 mm radius, 80 mm between crease lines and 40 mm high. Do not accordion-fold the arch. With the printed face on the outside of the arch, mountain-fold the two end tabs inward 18.435 degrees from the downward tangent so they follow the sloping basket walls.
-
Glue handle inside opposite walls
Center each 14 mm handle end on a marked inside-wall patch, 40 mm from either rim corner. Glue the contacting face of each entire 15 mm tab down the wall, with its crease exactly at the rim. Each tab reaches 14.230 mm vertically below the rim. Attach one end, then the opposite end without twisting; the arch crown is 70 mm above the floor. Clip the joints and allow glue to cure fully according to its label.
-
Check the decorative basket
Check that all four corners are bonded, the base is closed and flat, and both handle ends have full 14 x 15 mm contact. Add only light dry decoration such as tissue flowers. Carry by supporting the base rather than relying on the handle. Physical fit, springback and load capacity remain unverified until a real sample is made.
Notes
The 3D model shows each piece in its finished, idealized shape; the exploded view only spreads the pieces apart. It is not a paper-physics simulation: curved shapes are forming guides, not exact physical folding or proof of developability, and intermediate fold shapes are not supplied.
- Original two-piece construction. Physical printing, cutting, assembly and load testing pending.
- The four walls rise 30 mm and flare outward 10 mm: developed wall height 31.623 mm, bottom edge 60 mm and top edge 80 mm. Floor and walls are one continuous net.
- Four 7 mm corner tabs are part of B1, with 3 mm clipped ends. H1 is 14 x 155.664 mm: 125.664 mm free arch and two 15 mm glue ends. No hidden supports or extra pieces.
- Arch is a developable cylindrical strip, sampled into 96 segments (chords slightly shorter than the smooth arc). Paper/glue thickness and springback are not simulated; contacting glue surfaces coincide in this zero-thickness model.
- For light dry decorative contents such as tissue flowers only. No rated carrying capacity; support the base when moving. Not for food, liquids or heavy objects.
