Five-lobed Morning Glory
A flared violet trumpet assembled from five exact two-tier faceted gores, with scalloped lobes and a narrow open pentagonal throat.
Materials
- 120-160 gsm violet paper (printable on both sides or hand colored)
- Scissors
- Scoring tool and ruler
- PVA glue
- Fine tweezers
- Optional violet and pale yellow colored pencils
Finished size: Approximately 91 x 90 x 49 mm; open throat 9.71 mm across flats

-
Print, identify and cut five gores
Print at 100%; check the 50 mm ruler. Cut G1-G5 once each, keeping both right-edge tabs. Transfer IDs lightly to the outside. Printed faces are the outside of the trumpet; color the inside violet with a pale throat if desired before folding.
-
Score the flared shoulders
On each gore score the horizontal 14.11 mm line, 26.45 mm up the slant from the narrow base. Valley-fold by 46.2 degrees from flat (interior paper angle 133.8 degrees), viewed from the printed outside. Keep both faces planar; the wide scalloped end opens away from the axis.
-
Pre-fold the seam tabs
Mountain-fold both right-edge tabs from the printed outside: narrow throat tab 70.6 degrees from flat; wide flare tab 37.5 degrees. Tabs are 3 mm and 4 mm deep respectively, with 2 mm endpoint relief. Dry-fit before applying glue. Leave every left edge uncreased.
-
Join G1 to G2
Apply a thin film of PVA to the outward contact faces of G1 right tabs. Place them under the plain left edge of G2: 3 mm throat lap and 4 mm flare lap. Butt the cut edge against the tab hinge, align the shoulder endpoints and rim valley exactly; do not overlap the main faces. Press with tweezers from the open mouth, then hold 60 seconds and allow at least 5 minutes before the next join. Keep the assembly open as a chain.
-
Join G2 to G3
Apply a thin film of PVA to the outward contact faces of G2 right tabs. Place them under the plain left edge of G3: 3 mm throat lap and 4 mm flare lap. Butt the cut edge against the tab hinge, align the shoulder endpoints and rim valley exactly; do not overlap the main faces. Press with tweezers from the open mouth, then hold 60 seconds and allow at least 5 minutes before the next join. Keep the assembly open as a chain.
-
Join G3 to G4
Apply a thin film of PVA to the outward contact faces of G3 right tabs. Place them under the plain left edge of G4: 3 mm throat lap and 4 mm flare lap. Butt the cut edge against the tab hinge, align the shoulder endpoints and rim valley exactly; do not overlap the main faces. Press with tweezers from the open mouth, then hold 60 seconds and allow at least 5 minutes before the next join. Keep the assembly open as a chain.
-
Join G4 to G5
Apply a thin film of PVA to the outward contact faces of G4 right tabs. Place them under the plain left edge of G5: 3 mm throat lap and 4 mm flare lap. Butt the cut edge against the tab hinge, align the shoulder endpoints and rim valley exactly; do not overlap the main faces. Press with tweezers from the open mouth, then hold 60 seconds and allow at least 5 minutes before the next join. Keep the assembly open as a chain.
-
Close the trumpet
Dry-fit G5 right tabs under G1 left edge. Close the lower throat seam first, pressing through the open bottom with tweezers. Then close the flare seam through the wide mouth. Use the same 3 mm / 4 mm laps; align both shoulder corners before pressing. Hold 60 seconds; let the whole flower dry 20 minutes or per glue instructions.
-
Check the open throat and five-lobed rim
The lower pentagonal opening is 9.71 mm across flats; shoulder is 19.42 mm across flats at height 26 mm. Five rim valleys are at height 44 mm and five lobe crowns near 49 mm. Keep the bottom open and the lobes planar. This is a loose flower head for display on its side, not a self-standing stemmed plant. Do not force onto a rod or pinch the throat closed; no hidden support is required.
Notes
The 3D model shows each piece in its finished, idealized shape; the exploded view only spreads the pieces apart. It is not a paper-physics simulation: curved shapes are forming guides, not exact physical folding or proof of developability, and intermediate fold shapes are not supplied.
- Original faceted morning-glory flower head: five scalloped planar lobes, not a smooth botanical surface.
- Every gore and its two glue tabs have exact flat-to-assembled rigid-face correspondence. No arbitrary surface stretching, hidden cuts, stem, wire or separate glue pieces.
- Glue tabs contact the inside of the next gore. Paper and glue thickness are idealized to zero; contact surfaces coincide in the preview.
- Fold angles are rotations from flat, not interior dihedral angles; mountain/valley is viewed from the printed outside.
- Physical printing, cutting and assembly pending. Dry-fit throat access, seam alignment and paper springback before treating this as a verified craft.
