Raised Beach Hut

A seaside hut on four folded square paper piers, with a laminated slatted porch, three self-supporting box steps and a rising single-slope roof.

Materials

  • 200-240 gsm cardstock
  • Scissors or craft knife

  1. Cut and score

Print at 100%; the ruler must measure 50 mm. Cut each numbered piece once. Score dashed folds before cutting small tabs. Use 200-240 gsm card. All dimensions below are mm.

  2. Fold four paper piers

L1-L4: fold the four 8 x 24 panels into an 8 mm square tube, turning each vertical crease 90 degrees. Glue the 3 mm end lap inside the first panel. Turn the four inset top flanges outward 90 degrees. Keep lower ends square on a flat table and let dry. No wooden legs are needed.

  3. Stiffen the raised deck

D: keep the 72 x 70 centre flat, fold all 4 mm skirts down 90 degrees. Turn the four 3 mm corner tabs inward and glue inside adjacent skirts. Dry square. Define x from the left deck edge and y from the front edge; the hut will occupy y=24 to 64.

  4. Attach deck to piers

With D upside down, glue each pier top flange to its underside. Pier footprints: L1 x=8..16,y=8..16; L2 x=56..64,y=8..16; L3 x=8..16,y=54..62; L4 x=56..64,y=54..62. The 3 mm outward flanges stay inside the deck rim. Stand all four feet level; deck top is nominally 24 above the table. Dry fully.

  5. Lay the slatted porch

Glue S1-S6 flat on the deck across its entire 72 mm width. Their front edges are at y=0,4,8,12,16,20 respectively. Each strip is 3 wide, leaving a 1 mm gap showing the continuous structural deck below. These are real separate laminated slats, not printed lines.

  6. Make supported steps

T1-T3: fold the four sides down 90 degrees from each 28 x 8 tread. Turn corner tabs inward and glue inside the adjoining side walls. Leave bottoms open. Heights are 8,16,24 respectively. Dry on a level surface; each tread is supported on four walls.

  7. Join the stair flight

Centre stairs across deck x=22..50. T1 occupies y=-24..-16, T2 y=-16..-8, T3 y=-8..0. Glue the touching vertical faces over their common 8 mm and 16 mm heights. Glue the upper 4 mm of T3 rear face against the front deck skirt. All stair feet rest on the table; the top tread meets the deck at height 24.

  8. Decorate front wall

Glue DOOR on F with its lower edge at the wall base and its left edge 20 mm from the left wall edge. V1 and V2 are 10 x 12 overlays with left edges 6 and 40 mm from that edge and bottoms 22 mm above the wall base. Door and windows are decorative closed panels.

  9. Erect the cabin

Fold the 5 mm bottom flanges of F,B,W1,W2 inward 90 degrees. Glue to D: F spans x=8..64 at y=24; B spans x=8..64 at y=64. W1 is x=8 and W2 x=64, both spanning y=24..64. Front height is 42, rear height 54. Fold the side tabs of F and B inward 90 degrees and glue inside W1/W2. Keep all walls vertical and dry before roofing.

  10. Fit the rising shed roof

Tilt F and B top flanges inward to follow a roof rising 12 over 40 toward the rear: F flange turns 73.30 degrees from its upward wall extension; B turns 106.70 degrees. Dry-fit R with its 66 mm edge across the hut, overhanging each side by 5, front and rear by 4 horizontally. Glue underside to both 5 mm roof flanges; long edges rest on sloping side walls. Hold gently until set.

Notes

The 3D model shows each piece in its finished, idealized shape; the exploded view only spreads the pieces apart. It is not a paper-physics simulation: curved shapes are forming guides, not exact physical folding or proof of developability, and intermediate fold shapes are not supplied.
